Repairing Your Windshield Rock Chips and Cracks | Why it is so Important

September 23rd, 2022 by

The windshield of your vehicle is the window to the road ahead.  Having optimal visibility while driving is of the utmost importance.  In the state of Montana, the lifespan of a windshield is about 14 months.  Continuing to drive with a rock chip or crack in your windshield may not seem like a big deal but it can be hazardous.  Small cracks and chips can also spread and become significantly larger if not repaired promptly.  Here are a few reasons why you should fix any rock chips or cracks as soon as possible.

Reflection

Even having a small crack or rock chip can cause reflection.  Sunlight can reflect from these cracks, causing the light to shine in any direction, including directly into the eyes of the driver or oncoming drivers. When there is not a smooth, transparent surface for the light to shine through, its direction is unpredictable.

Headaches

If the rock chip or crack is within the driver’s line of sight, it can cause headaches by requiring the driver to strain their eyes to focus on the road ahead or by causing glare to shine in their eyes.

Safety

Most advanced safety system technology relies on sensors and cameras located in the windshield.  Having a crack or chip can cause this system to malfunction.  One known technology is the Lane Departure Warning System.  This helps to keep drivers in their lane and on the road.  The malfunction of this could be very dangerous.

Unpleasant Appearance

Most people spend a lot of time and money to keep their vehicles looking good.  Having a beautiful car, truck, or SUV with a crack or rock chip in the windshield is a major eyesore.  Would you go around with cracked glasses?  Most would not, and trust us, your vehicle doesn’t want to either.  Most would throw them away immediately and buy new ones.  Your windshield deserves the same.
