Windshield & Detail Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to recalibrate my windshield after replacing the glass?

Recalibrating your windshield after glass replacement is crucial for several reasons:

Safety Systems

Many modern vehicles are equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that rely on sensors and cameras mounted near the windshield. These systems, including lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and collision avoidance, depend on a properly calibrated windshield for accurate operation. If the windshield is not recalibrated correctly, the ADAS may not function properly. Thus, potentially compromising the safety features of your vehicle.

Sensor Alignment

Windshield replacement involves removing and reinstalling various sensors and cameras that are integrated into the glass. These components need to be precisely aligned and calibrated to ensure accurate readings and performance. Improper alignment can result in misinterpretation of data or false readings, affecting the functionality of the vehicle’s safety systems.

Vehicle Performance

A misaligned windshield can impact the overall performance of your vehicle. It can affect the accuracy of features like rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlight control, and adaptive lighting systems since these safety systems rely on clear and unobstructed sensor data.

Insurance

Some insurance companies and state regulations require proper windshield calibration of safety systems after a windshield replacement. Failure to comply with these requirements may void insurance coverage.

To ensure the safety, reliability, and optimal performance of your vehicle, it is essential to have your windshield recalibrated. At Kalispell Volkswagen, we use special equipment and follow any manufacturer guidelines to ensure that sensors and cameras are precisely aligned and calibrated. We perform all installations by our Certified Windshield Technician.

Can I roll my windows down after replacing the glass on my windshield?

We recommend not rolling down any windows for 48 hours. Rolling down any window can cause cabin pressure. This can cause the windshield glass to push up and off of the urethane bead, so it’s best to wait and give the urethane bead time to come to a complete seal.

When can I clean my windshield after replacement?

For best results, you should wait 24 hours before cleaning your windshield. For example, if the windshield comes in contact with any pressurized water it can break the urethane seal, creating small leaks.

What do I do if I get a rock chip in my windshield?

Any and all rock chips need to be filled within 24 hours. This is to avoid any further spreading or cracking of the glass. The replacement of the entire windshield is necessary when any rock chips or cracks are within a foot of the driver’s field of view. This is to ensure clear visibility and driver safety. These chips and cracks, when found within the immediate sightline of the driver, must be attended to promptly as they can cause distractions and obstruct the view of the road, increasing the risk of accidents and compromising reaction time.

It is important to note that attempting to repair such significant damage may still result in visible distortions or a potential weakening of the structural integrity of the glass. A new windshield installation becomes imperative to guarantee a clear and undistorted view for the driver, promoting optimal safety while driving. You can consult with our professional Certified Windshield Technician or contact Kalispell Volkswagen to promptly and effectively address any further windshield questions that may arise. How long does it take to replace my windshield?

Typically it takes a total of 3-4 hours to replace the glass and recalibrate your cameras and sensors.

Do I need to make an appointment for a windshield replacement?

Though we highly recommend an appointment, it is not a requirement. However, any walk-in windshield replacement customers must drop their vehicle off in the morning and leave it at Kalispell Volkswagen for the day. In most cases we can complete the replacement the same day.
